Tile & Stone

Tile & Stone are durable and low maintenance. Options for this upscale addition to homes include ceramic, porcelain or quarry tile, terra cotta, or natural stone such as slate or marble.

While a beautiful ceramic tiled floor looks expensive, affordable, quality tile is available. High-gloss tile will become slippery when it gets wet but there are many choices of textured ceramic tiles that provide steadier footing on the market.

Porcelain tile is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth. Its three finishes -  matte, unglazed or highly polished – make it easy to customize the tile to personal decorating preferences. Porcelain is well-liked for its resistance to wear, imperviousness to spills, and rich design.

Unglazed clays are mixed to form quarry tile, which usually comes in squares, rectangles and hexagons. It is customarily shades of dark red because it is extruded from natural clay or shale, although it is available in other earth tones, such as gray or brown, depending on how long and how hot it was fired. Quarry tile is most commonly used in exterior and commercial interior applications.

Terra cotta, also known as Mexican or saltillo tile, most often is handmade. It can be found in a range of colors and textures, as well as pre-finished or unfinished.

Natural stone used to be something you’d only use outside, but it has come in from the cold in recent years, creating striking room foundations due to its numerous, intricate patterns. It is available as polished marble, granite, slate or travertine.
